    Wheatear

    (Oenanthe oenanthe)

    Alert Status: Green - 38% decline
    Identifying Features: Small mainly ground-dwelling bird. It hops or runs on the ground. Male is blue-grey above, with black wings and white below with an orange flush to the breast. It has a black cheek. During flight it shows a white rump and a black 'T' shape on its tail.
    Average Length: 15-16 cm
    Average Lifespan: 8 years
    Average Wingspan: 29 cm

    What to feed:   
    Nesting: Often found in a cavity such as a rabbit burrow, a crevice among rocks or in a made-made object such as a wall or pipe. The nest typically has a foundation of untidy plant material, and the nest cup is constructed of finer grasses, leaves, moss and lichen.

     

    Where to see: In the breeding season, wheatear are most likely to be seen on upland suitable habitat in northern and western Britain.
