THE PROBLEM
Songbird numbers have crashed In only one generation. Farmland birds have halved, some have fared worse.
WHY? Habitat loss and modern farming get the blame...BUT Habitat is improving...
sbs Broadleaved woodland is up a third since 1947
sbs Each year 4,400 km of hedges have been planted annually
sbs 5,700km of derelict hedgerows have been restored
sbs 70% of farms are now in Agri-environment schemes - farmers are paid to look after wildlife
Songbird numbers should have recovered but they haven't....WHY NOT?
SongBird Survival says:
sbs Rising levels of uncontrolled predation are ignored
sbs Existing research is out-of-date and flawed
sbs New High-Quality research is urgently needed
