Keith Cowieson

A lifelong birdwatcher & ornithologist who was fortunate enough during a long career in the RAF to indulge his passion from the Arctic to the Falkland Islands and from Canada to Afghanistan.

He has led RAF Ornithological Society expeditions to Svalbard, mainland Arctic Norway, and the Shetland and Orkney Isles in support of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee and Seabird Group, as well as guiding private bird tours in southern Spain. In 2011. he took early retirement from the RAF and joined the Senior Civil Service as Deputy Director for the Integration Readiness, Testing, and Exercising of senior officials and politicians during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Following the Games, Keith was the Director of SongBird Survival for over 7 years, until re-joining the MoD as a civil servant during the Covid-19 pandemic. When not supervising flying at RNAS Culdrose, Keith enjoys roaming the uplands and islands of his native Scotland and the moors and coastal cliffs of his adopted North Cornish home in search of any and all birds to survey, study and photograph. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute member of the British Ornithologists’ Union and British Trust for Ornithology, and supports the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club, Cornish Bird Watching and Preservation Society, Hawk and Owl Trust, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust.
