Other wildlife

Wildlife that are helpful:

  • birds – eat insects and caterpillars, which are essential for nestling growth

  • hedgehogs – eat slugs and snails

  • toads and frogs – eat slugs and snails and other pest insects

  • mice and voles – eat seeds and weedlings

  • ladybirds – eat aphids

  • beetles – eat plants, nectar, pollinate plants and process waste

  • lacewings – pollinate plants

  • hoverflies – pollinate plants

  • bees – pollinate plants

  • wasps – pollinate plants and tidy waste

  • centipedes – process waste

  • spiders – eat aphids and other pest insects

  • woodlice – process waste

  • worms – process waste and help aerate soil

These species may adversely affect helpful wildlife:​

  • grey squirrels – destroy habitat, compete for food and eat eggs, fledglings and adult birds

  • rats – eat eggs, fledglings and steal food

  • rabbits – eat and kill plants, dig in gardens

  • magpies – actively target eggs and fledglings in nests, can kill adult birds

  • crows – target eggs and fledglings, can kill adult birds

  • jays – actively target fledglings, will eat eggs

  • deer – eat and kill plants, destroy habitat

  • cats – eat fledglings and adult birds, small mammals, amphibians, spiders and insects

  • aphids – can infest and destroy many plants

  • harlequin ladybirds – compete with native ladybirds for food – will also eat native ladybirds

  • lily beetles – can kill lily plants

  • slugs & snails – will eat any plants, especially tender species
