SongBird Survival is celebrating after receiving a prestigious Silver Gilt medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this week for its SongBird Survival Garden which was designed by Nicola Oakey.

The stunning garden aims to raise awareness of the plight of our nation’s songbirds which have declined by 50% over the last two decades. With RHS Chelsea Flower Show now open to the public, the garden aims to inspire a new generation of “songbird champions” to ensure our gardens don’t fall silent.

The SongBird Survival Garden focuses on the three key elements of food, shelter and water, that are vital in supporting bird life. The garden is set to be a favourite with the many bird-loving visitors to the show, as Nicola has cleverly designed this beautiful and immersive garden from the perspective of a bird foraging for food and water, with two meandering paths mimicking a bird’s movement through the garden’s countryside-inspired planting scheme.

This medal is a testament to Nicola’s brilliant vision and the incredible hard work of everyone who has helped to bring the garden to life,” said Sue Morgan, CEO of SongBird Survival. “We are looking to welcoming over 100,000 visitors through the show this week to experience the garden and hope they will be inspired to help keep our songbirds singing.”

The SongBird Survival Garden has been generously sponsored by Project Giving Back, the unique grant-giving charity that funds gardens for good causes at RHS Chelsea.

Following RHS Chelsea, the SongBird Survival Garden will move to its permanent home with the Neighbourhood Network Charity, who manage a bustling community centre, based in Bransholme, Hull. This community centre will be a well-loved resource for all ages to learn about the natural world, gardening and enjoy the wellbeing benefits that come from spending time in nature, listening to birdsong.
